Vesuvius & The Last Day of Pompeii

Our special tour into the past, nearly 2000 years ago starts with a visit to the ancient city of Pompeii founded in the 6th century BC and devastated and buried less than 600 years later on August 24th, 79 AD by the volcanic eruption of Mount Vesuvius and remained undiscovered again nearly 1700 years later in 1748.

Your private guide and their driver for the day meets you at your ship and your off to the restored areas of Pompeii for a 2 hour tour. The excavated town offers a snapshot of Roman life in the 1st century, frozen at the moment it was buried on August 24th, 79 AD. The Forum, the baths, many houses, and some out-of-town villas like the Villa of the Mysteries remain surprisingly well preserved.

After Pompeii, travel towards Mount Vesuvius to Vini Vesuvus, a family owned winery on the slopes of Vesuvius. Tour the vineyards followed by a tasting of three wines; white, red and rose’ and a light lunch including varieties of sausages, cheeses, biscotti, olives and seasonal vegetables plus Vesuvian oil and bruschette and desert accompanied with the dessert wine, Passito.

Note: If you prefer a sit down lunch is available with wine tasting, appetizers, gnocchi, eggplant parmigiana, dessert and grappa for an additional $20 per person

After lunch proceed to Mt. Vesuvius, the mountain formed 25,000 years ago that has erupted many times in prehistory and since 79 AD is believed to have erupted 42 more times, the last recorded in 1944. It’s still active and one of the most dangerous volcanoes in the world, mostly because 3,000,000 people are living in the immediate area.

Driving near to the cone, high up the mountain. you’ll be able to see the path of the molten lava and ash that covered Pompeii and Herculaneum.

Choose to climb the last 200 meters to the top (650 feet) Vesuvius accompanied by your guide and walk around the crater at 3,900 feet (1,200 meters) to see a memorable view of the bay of Naples from east to west. A medium to high level of fitness is required to complete the climb. There is a rest point at 1000 meters where you can choose to wait for your party if you do not wish to climb all the way to the top.

From Vesuvius you return to your ship with unforgettable memories of the lifestyle of the Romans over 2000 years ago and the havoc that can be wreaked on man at a moments notice.
